I gave myself over to the TV and just melted into the floor and watched it all play out. The credit music, a slow melody distilled in a test tube to invoke whimsical nostalgia, started to play over the vignettes of all the levels of the game. I had beat other games before, but none had felt as big as this one.

I swelled with excitement at finishing the game for the first time. I had been playing the game continuously for months as an exploratory endeavor developing my juvenile video game skills as I inched along the gameвЂ™s star requirement to вЂњbeat the game.вЂќ But eventually I did beat the game, with sweaty palms and a shortness of breath from always holding it every time I tossed Bowser into a bomb.

I had no idea what it took to reach the top of the endless staircase. There was a wonderment associated with SM64 that I could have only felt in the prime of my boyhood, and boy did I. I loved that game, and at the time there was no other game like it, so the experience was so singular and special. What a pleasure.ДЇor a different sort of happiness, the first time I was ever moved to tears by a video game was at a young age reaching the credits of Super Mario 64 for the first time. That game filled me with joy from start to finish. The visuals are fun, the sound is fun, the music is fun, the level design is fun. I donвЂ™t like to describe things as вЂњpure funвЂќ because I donвЂ™t think that usually does a good job of describing the thing in question, but I think itвЂ™s an apt descriptor of AstroвЂ™s Playroom. AstroвЂ™s Playroom on the PS5 was definitely one of the most joyful games I ever played.
